Home insurance providers can cover items you keep in your garden such as gnomes. Whether you own a rare antique gnome, a ceramic replica of a traditional gnome or a modern plastic gnome, your home insurance can protect you financially if your gnomes are lost, damaged or stolen.
UK home insurance providers vary, so when hunting for cheap home insurance online be sure to compare the extent of cover as well as the cost. You may be surprised by the extent of cover some home insurance policies offer: home insurance plans may include garden furniture, beehives, bird tables, statues and of course gnomes as long as they are lost or damaged whilst out in the open within the boundaries of the land that belongs to your home.
Home insurance policies that offer this extensive cover may include antique gnomes, which have quite different characteristics to their modern equivalents and can be extremely valuable.
In fact, due to their increased popularity you can probably find a garden gnome doing virtually anything: Traditional poses such as fishing, napping and smoking a pipe remain popular, but you might prefer a gnome with a stance inspired by modern life, such as waiting at a bus stop, playing an electric guitar or taking a photo. Your garden gnome should be included in your home insurance however old he is and whatever he is up to.
As inoffensive and light-hearted as they may seem, garden gnomes can cause controversy. At the Chelsea Flower show, which is visited by 157,000 people each year, gnomes have been banned. But that isn’t to say this decision was unanimous.
In 2009 a member of the RHS’s ruling council attempted to conceal her lucky gnome, Borage, in amongst the undergrowth of her garden. Though she claimed he was “a subtle gnome” he was still required to leave before her garden was judged. Fortunately in your own garden, you can display whatever you like!
Home insurance providers often include belongings kept in your garden as well as those kept in your home. However they probably won’t pay more than a specified amount for any one claim under garden cover, so if you own a valuable antique gnome it might be worth keeping him safe indoors.
Whether you consider gnomes to be controversial, funny, or lucky, they can add a playful tone to your garden, and might even spark a debate. One thing you cannot debate, however – is how important home insurance can be to protect your family of gnomes.
