February 24, 2012
By

Gardening  folk in Chandler’s Ford are being invited to show off their floral skills as the launches it’s first Chandler’s Ford in Bloom competition.

The entry categories are:

  • Blooming Schools
  • It’s Your Neighbourhood
  • Best front garden visible from the pavement
  • Business premises with container planting or hanging baskets

Local communities are encouraged to take part where larger planting schemes or groups of residents may work together to produce stunning floral displays or other community planting schemes.

Schools may wish to consider floral displays to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the 2012 Olympics, planting for nature, wildflowers or any other imaginative planting schemes.

It is hoped that as many residents or businesses will take part with individual planting and put further colour in to Chandler’s Ford!

Judging will take place in the week commencing 2 July 2012 with a final entry date of 16 June 2012, however you are encouraged to enter now as entries may be restricted if there are a large number of entries to be judged.

Chairman of Chandler’s Ford Parish Council Margaret Atkinson said,

“This is a really exciting new event for Chandler’s Ford which will not only be fun, but will enhance the appearance of our Parish.  Hopefully this will become a regular event and we encourage all residents to take part.”

Full details of the competition criteria and application form can be obtained from Stephen Mursell, Parish Clerk on 023 8026 6612 , or

What a delightful idea for a quiet little country village where the sun warms the local cricket green and the only sounds are birds singing in the gently rustling lime trees and the occasional polite applause following the successful crack of leather on willow and a distant cry of “six”! Wouldn’t it be nice if Chandlers Ford took this up?

We in Chandlers Ford will be doing our very best. You only just have to walk around the nieghbourhood to see there are some extremley good gardeners who have some well tended gardens.

Chandlers Ford may no longer be a sleepy village as Peter describes, but we do have the lakes and some open green areas for recreation. I’m sure residents will put on a great show for all to see.

Transition Chandlers Ford aims to take this on this year as the theme is Wildflowers. Wildflowers are very important to plant because they are pollinating flowers that bring pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hover flies. It’s important we all plant these wildflowers because there is evidence that these pollinators are dying out -- meaning extreme consequences for the future of our food.
